| Minutes of Meeting | Our club meeting on August 5, 2023, was action-packed, the agenda crammed with reports covering two weeks of activities, announcements, and engaging speakers. President Ajay Chitnis began the proceedings by welcoming and exchanging flags with visiting Rotarian K. Raisinghani from Jaipur, and Rtn. Aruna Rathi, President of the Rotary Club of Pune Downtown. He gave an update on the GST issue, and said that the Mahableshwar picnic had been a huge success. President Ajay also gave a quick rundown of other ongoing events and projects, including the valedictory function and awards ceremony of the Coastal and River Banks Clean-up, Eye Check-up Camps, Financial Literacy Training, distribution of utensil kits to the flood affected, a generous CSR contribution by the Desai Brothers, the Gift of Vision surgery project, a memorial for Mrs Gita Vir, the Mega Tree Plantation Drive at Gathagram, and the installation of Interact Clubs at Sayuddh School Hadapsar and the Anjuman Islam School. The new theme where Past Presidents get the chance to reminisce about their year in office continued with PP Ebe Chaney reflecting on his eventful term from 1989–90, which he called “a remarkable period of my life” during which he focused on improving attendance at club meetings and strengthening fellowship. We extended birthday greetings to Col. V. Nandakumar (Retd), R’Ann Dr. Bhavna Rote, Rtn. PP Prakash Gurbaxani, R’Ann Gaury Mohile, Rtn. PP Jinendra Munot, Rtn. Giri Sakhrani, Rtn. Dr. Arti Khatter, R’Ann Disha Patel, Rtn. Tony Sachdev, R’Ann Deepa Dharane, R’Ann Dr. Pushpa Yadav, Rtn. Prasanta Choudhury, and Rtn. Vipen Malhotra. Good wishes for their wedding anniversaries were offered to Rtn. Baakir and R’Ann Razia Baker, and to Rtn. Parvin and R’Ann Neena Malhotra. We then moved on to the highlight of the evening as R’Ann Dr. Sita Bhatia introduced the guest speaker, Rtn. PP Sanjiv Kumar, who gave an entertaining and informative talk on ChatGPT (Generative Pre- trained Transformer), an Artificial Intelligence tool created by the research company OpenAI. Rtn. Sanjiv presented several examples of the impressive scope of ChatGPT, requesting it to develop meal plans to his specifications, to compose a Hindi song with lyrics in the style of Javed Akhtar, a poem in English in Shakespearean verse, and an Urdu nazm à la Mirza Ghalib. It was abundantly clear that we are entering a brave new world in which a software application can respond within seconds to questions and prompts to compose articles, stories, social media posts, code, and emails. It remains to be seen whether the inevitable downside of these artificial innovations will result in people forgetting to use their thinking capacity and losing their creativity. The enjoyable evening was rounded off with Happy Hours and dinner hosted by Rtn. Sanjiv Kumar. |
