In keeping with the Rotary Principle, "Service Above Self”, RCPC implemented it's first project of the Rotary Year 2019-20 by donating new Dell laptops to 25 visually challenged students who have undergone Basic/ Advance computer courses @ Technical training institute of Poona blind men's association Ramtekdi Hadapsar Pune on Thursday 4th July. " A person with blindness can perform at par with any sighted person, provided the person has access to the appropriate technology. Over the decades, computer have played the role of one such enabling technology. A standard computer with a screen reading software installed on it can enable a person with blindness to perform variety of tasks at schools, colleges and office by using the audio output. " " NVDA (Non Visual Desktop Access) is an open source screen reading software that is continuously being improved by the global team. It’s freely available and any person with blindness can freely download it to convert a standard computer to a life changing assistive technology solution." A recent video on NVDA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cQiTv-pno0andfeature=youtu.be Despite of availability of such enabling solutions, a lot of youngsters do not have access to computers simply because of affordability and proper training issues. Therefore, we seek support of organizations to provide funds so that affordable laptops can be procured and given to most deserving candidates at a subsidized rates. To make this effort a life changing experience for the beneficiaries, we would thoroughly train them in using the computers with NVDA screen reading software. By joining hands, we can ensure that the beneficiaries will possess the technology as well as skills to use it for living an independent life. A new contemporary laptop loaded with the required features cost around Rs30000 each is donated at a subsidized amount of Rs15000 to each of the student with extensive training thus helping him in his education and creating opportunities for his employment thereafter. The balance amount of Rs15000 is contributed by each of the student thus giving her/him the feeling of belonging and responsibility. President Rtn. Jinendra Munot, IPP Ravi Kapoor, Director community service Rtn. Ajay Dubey, Director Youth Rtn. Vanita Bajaj and Rtn. Roma Dubey were present to guide these students and bless them. Few Students who have completed their training and have been the beneficiaries of the Laptop project shared their experience and the benefits they have achieved in furthering their future career. Rtn Ajay Dubey enquired about these students’ background and prospects of their employment and shared his views with an assurance to guide them in their training programs to enable the students to get required employment. RCPC till date since 2016-17 donated laptops to around 165 students at T T I and around 35 students at various NGO supporting visually challenged students pursuing higher education in and around Pune. Our special thanks to all those Donors for their kind support and contribution towards this project.
