The Rotary Club of Pune Central (RCPC) embarked on a meaningful journey to Ghorpadi village in Pune Camp, seeking opportunities to support the community. In October, a team of dedicated members, including President Rtn Brig Raja, Rtn Madhvi Kshettri, Rtn Prabhat Singh, Rtn Shireesh Nadkar, and Gajanan Tinkhede, visited the village with multiple objectives: to understand the community's needs and how RCPC can assist them to help themselves with Rotary's support. The team's first meeting was with six local social workers who have already formed an NGO called HESA. These individuals are already contributing to the community individually, and RCPC aimed to help them form a Rotary Community Corps (RCC) for the betterment of their community. President Raja explained the purpose of RCC, and the required forms were provided as per Rotary International's guidelines. Subsequently, the team visited a Primary school in Ghorpadi, interacting with teachers and students to understand their needs and issues. The funding from PMC is inadequate, and the basic need is uniforms for the children. They also visited a school for mentally challenged children, supported by the Poona Women's Council. The school, located in a low-lying area, faced disruptions due to recent rains. Their needs are simple: fans in the rooms and donations from organizations like RCPC to sustain their programs. The team was impressed by the children's artistic skills, observing paintings, Diwali "pantis," and paper bags made by them, which are sold to well-wishers. Additionally, RCPC members visited two Anganwadis in the area to understand their operational needs. Anganwadi, meaning "courtyard shelter," is a rural childcare center initiated by the Indian government in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development Services program to combat child hunger and malnutrition. Anganwadi workers motivate married women to adopt family planning and birth control measures. The children, aged 1-6 years, require fans and simple educational toys. The final visit was to Ghorpadi Secondary school, run by the PMC. The team interacted with enthusiastic students and teachers, noting their ambition to become teachers, IAS officers, and more. However, their needs are substantial: more computers, glass blackboards, and uniforms, as funding from local authorities is meagre. Coincidentally, one of RCPC's Rotarian’s driver had studied in this very school. This momentous visit was an eye-opening experience, revealing opportunities for meaningful impact in RCPC's own backyard. As Rotarians, they are committed to empowering Ghorpadi village and making a tangible difference.
