It is said that strong determination combined with self-confidence enables a person to overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles. On Friday, 24th Aug, I saw a live example playing out at the Technical Training Institute of the Poona Blind Men's Association at Ramwadi, Hadapsar. Rtn Anil Bora arranged an interactive session for about 100 Students of this Institute on the subject of SEBI and employment opportunities for the visually impaired in the Financial Services sector. Mr.Shailesh Pingale, AGM (Investigations) and Mr.Rahul Kelapure, Sr.Manager (Enforcement) were the speakers from SEBI, Mumbai. Interestingly, Mr.Kelapure - a visually impaired person himself, completed his schooling from Chandrapur and graduation+MBA from Mumbai and is working with SEBI for the past 6 years. He is also persuing his Company Secretary course. Through an interactive QandA format, both the speakers shared a lot of information and tips with the audience who not only asked pertinent questions but enthusiastically gave correct answers. The level and depth of knowledge displayed by the audience comprising young boys and girls, regarding the stock market and various financial savings instruments was pleasantly surprising considering their handicaps. The experience forced me to introspect and re-visit some of my pre-conceptions about the visually impaired fraternity. I came out of the session convinced that a little support and guidance from us can put them firmly on a track leading to a life of dignity.
