29-02-2024 - 29-02-2024

This project was initiated in the last Rotary Year, and an inspection of the Dam Repaired last year was undertaken in December 2023. The Water level was found to be very good, and this water body, which usually turned dry ha sufficient water to last till February/March, despite a Lean Monsoon in 2023. This year it was decided to undertake repairs of a large dam – about 380 m long, in Village Rajapur, in Satara District. The repairs involve clearing up the Dam-face, Digging a 10 feet-wide Trench, Covering the trench and the Dam-face with 20-Micron plastic sheets, Re-filling the Trench with Black soil and Dry Cement, and re-laying the stones on the Dam-face. This work extensive use of an Earth-mover; To mark the commencement of the project a Pooja was performed by the Local Sarpanch and R’Ann Dipti, with breaking of the traditional coconuts. The ground-breaking ceremony was also conducted on Wednesday, the 28th of February. This work is expected to be completed in the next 25-30 days. The water collected in the dam not only provides for the irrigation needs of the area but also serves to raise the water table in the area, and filling up of the wells. This provides a great succour to the village and surrounding areas, as was seen in the area around the Dam repaired last year. We plan to visit the site again next month, and it would be a great experience for our members to see Rotary in action.
