Rapid vaccination of all the citizens is the main long-term weapon to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. It is also the fastest way to reach herd immunity. The government has already set up multiple vaccination centres. However, there are still areas comprising bottom-of-the-pyramid communities having poor accessibility to hospitals and clinics, where there is hesitation among the people to get vaccinated. Aside from vaccine supply constraints, apathy and ignorance, old age, combined with fear of visiting hospital based covid vaccination centres is resulting in slow penetration of Immunization in the community. The municipal corporations provide the vaccines and identify the locations where the vaccination booth will be set up. They also provide space for the registration, vaccination, and observation areas. The clinic is run as a free vaccination centre of the government. The Mobile Vaccination Clinics are equipped with cold-chain facilities and an AEFI kit to handle cases of Adverse Event Following Immunization. They are manned by a trained doctor, 2 trained nurses, IT assistant for COWIN registration and a social worker to mobilize the beneficiaries. Once the vaccination drive is completed in one community, the clinic moves to another location. With the financial support of our CSR partners, Persistent Systems, BMC Software and Icertis, 5 Mobile clinics are already operational in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad since 17th April 2021. Over 5000 vaccines have already been administered. The official flag-off of the project was done by the Mayor of Pune Mr Murlidhar Mohol, the Municipal Commissioner Mr Vikram Kumar, and the Additional Municipal Commissioner Ms. Rubal Agarwal. In Pune the project started with the vaccination camp for over 200 workers of the Pune Metro Rail construction site. According to Ms. Rubal Agarwal, they are focusing on vulnerable groups at old age homes, mental rehabilitation institutions and others so that maximum people can be vaccinated, “For instance, at Niwara old age home, at least 180 senior citizens were vaccinated at their doorstep, while another 100 HIV-positive persons and sex workers were also administered the vaccine”. Hundred- and five-year-old Kondiba got his vaccine at one of the clinics at PCMC. Considering the importance of this project, we have received tremendous response from our CSR partners who want to contribute towards this initiative. This public-private partnership is working so well that the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai has also entered into a PPP arrangement with VOW for deploying the service in Mumbai. Municipal corporations of other cities like Goa, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar and Puri have also evinced interest in doing similar mobile vaccination camps.
