Music for Charity Gets off to a Rocking Start RCPC Rocks — Music for Charity made its debut with a piano concert at the Mazda Hall, on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Introducing the new fund-raising platform, Rtn. Vipen Malhotra, chairperson of RCPC Rocks — Music for Charity, said the aim was to raise funds for projects that will have significant social impact. The inaugural piano concert was in aid of women’s empowerment, a project that aims to provide laptops to specially-abled women to boost literacy, whilst imparting focused training in education, nutrition, self-defence, menstrual hygiene, and other subjects of vital importance to rural women. Vipen acknowledged the contribution of ICICI Securities, who sponsored the concert, and also thanked the principal of BNN Dastur Primary & Nursery School, the Poona Music Society, and RCPC members Pankaj Mehrotra and Sameer Desai for their help and support. The evening’s program began with a performance of the Ganapati Vandana by 10-year-old Myrah Mehrotra, and then it was time for the main attraction. Ankita Kumar, an award-winning pianist from Delhi, accompanied by Abhishek Bhosale on the tabla, struck the right note with her pitch-perfect rendition of popular Hindi film classics from Jagte Raho, Anari, Kashmir Ki Kali, Waqt, Guide, and Kal Ho Naa Ho among others, along with Western favorites such as Que Sera Sera and Mamma Mia. She kept the audience enthralled for nearly two hours, playing every item in her diverse repertoire from memory. Vipen aptly summed up Ankita’s virtuosity with an Urdu couplet, saying “she sings with her fingers”.
