Rotarians Surendra Shroff, Chairman of the Environment Committee, Dr. Sarang Rote, Director, Medical Services, and Brig P.K. Muralidharan Raja, Director, Non-Medical Services, visited the office of Mr. Yogesh Desai, Deputy Inspector General of the Prisons department of Maharashtra, at his office in Yerawada on July 11, 2022. The visit was coordinated and arranged by Rtn. Surendra Shroff. Desai apprised the RCPC team of the difficult conditions prevailing in Yerawada prison. He pointed out that although the capacity of Yerawada Central Jail was 2,500 inmates, the prison has more than 7,000 prisoners and hence problems due to overcrowding are rampant. Desai was of the opinion that organisations such as RCPC could assist the Prisons department through medical and non-medical projects. He added that in order to be meaningful, the projects should impact the lives of the prisoners during their stay as well as when they get released and join the mainstream. Rtn. Surendra Shroff, who led the discussion on behalf of RCPC, assured the DIG Prisons that RCPC would propose specific projects — both medical and non-medical — to try and alleviate the problems at Yerawada Jail. The RCPC team also visited the Maharashtra Jail Industry Retail Shop, where products such as bakery items, teak wood furniture, bed linen, carpets, durries, clothing, etc. made in-house by the inmates of Yerawada Jail, are displayed.
